Why bulk-cut fails at year four.
If you're past your novice gains and you've been doing the bulk-cut cycle, here is why you've stalled. The arithmetic is brutal. Worked end to end below.
The lean tissue ceiling.
Past year three, the natural lifter's body has hardened in. Each new pound of muscle takes more time, more food, more recovery.
The cross-creator consensus — Nippard, Helms, Israetel, Schoenfeld — is that natural lifters past year three gain about one to two pounds of lean tissue per year. Maybe three or four if they're a genetic outlier. That's it. The novice who gained fifteen pounds of muscle in year one is not the person you are at year four. That's biology, not effort.
| Year 1 (novice) | +15 lb / yr | Beginner-effect linear gains |
| Year 2–3 (intermediate) | +5–10 lb / yr | Slowing but still meaningful |
| Year 4+ (advanced) | +1–2 lb / yr | The ceiling — biology not effort |
| Year 7+ (near-ceiling) | +0.5 lb / yr | Maintenance is the win condition |
One cycle.
A year-four lifter, 175 lb start. Twelve weeks of bulking at +250 cal/day, twelve weeks cutting at −500 cal/day.
i. Bulk · +250 cal/day · 12 wk
ii. Cut · −500 cal/day · 12 wk
Run that same cycle for four years. You've maybe gained four pounds of lean tissue. And your face is puffier than year one — because each cycle leaves a little more fat residual you didn't quite finish stripping. That's not progress. That's a treadmill with extra steps. The four-year cycle, audited
The alternative.
Same six months. No surplus, no deficit. The whitespace nobody is selling.
iii. Maintenance · 6 months
iv. Why nobody sells this
The fitness industry sells programs in twelve-week chunks. "Lean recomp forever" is not a sellable transformation arc. It's a lifestyle. Kinobody tried this lane, oversold it, lost credibility. Even Nippard's own most recent project was a fourteen-month structured bulk — because that's what makes for content.
A brief structured 8–12 week cut is sometimes warranted — typically once a year, only if you've been at maintenance for six months and your body fat has drifted to 14–15 %. Helms cuts last 12–16 weeks max with structured refeeds. Israetel runs 6–12 week cuts with mandatory diet breaks. Key word: structured. Defined endpoint. Mandatory four-week maintenance phase before any thought of bulking. The full protocol lives at Volume 05 ($5 unlock).
What you do not do: drift from cut to "lean bulk" to "mini cut" to "lean bulk" again. That is the cycle. That is what we just spent the page explaining doesn't work.
